How Doctors in Indianapolis Get More Patients
Indianapolis is the fastest-growing big metro in the Midwest, and most of the new families live in the suburbs. Here is where new patients come from, and how to make sure they choose you.

Every doctor in Indianapolis asks the same question sooner or later: how do I get more patients? The good news is that the patients are coming. The Indianapolis metro grew faster than any other metro of more than a million people in the Midwest from 2020 to 2025, based on Census Bureau estimates. The question is whether they find you, or the practice down the road.
Where the New Patients Are
The Indianapolis metro added 116,044 residents from 2020 to 2025, reaching 2.21 million people. Almost all of that growth landed outside the city itself:
- Boone County (Zionsville, Lebanon): up 14.0%.
- Hancock County (Greenfield, McCordsville): up 14.0%.
- Hamilton County (Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield): up 11.4%, adding 39,546 people.
- Hendricks County (Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg): up 10.7%.
- Marion County, the city itself: up 1.5%.
A family that just moved to Fishers or Avon does not have a doctor yet. They do not ask a neighbor they have not met. They search, and they choose from what they see.
The Hospital Map Is Changing
IU Health is building a $4.3 billion downtown campus. Its new 864-bed hospital will replace Methodist and University hospitals and is expected to open in late 2027. Changes like that move referral patterns and send patients looking at their options again. When patients look again, they search again.
New patients in Indianapolis are not waiting for a referral. They are typing your specialty and their suburb into Google, or asking ChatGPT who to see.
How Indianapolis Patients Choose a Doctor
For most patients, the decision happens on a phone, in a few minutes:
- They search their need and their town: "knee surgeon Carmel," "pediatrician Fishers," "dermatologist near me."
- They compare the first few names they see: photos, reviews, credentials and how close the office is.
- They check you by searching your name before they call.
- More and more, they ask AI. Patients now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers who to see. Those answers name a few doctors, not ten.
If you do not show up in those few spots, you are not in the running, however good you are. Read more in How AI Search Is Reshaping How Patients Find Doctors.
Five Things That Bring Indianapolis Doctors More Patients
1. Show Up in the Suburbs You Serve
If your patients come from Carmel, Zionsville or Greenwood, your website should say so, clearly, with pages that patients in those towns would actually want to read. A website that only says "Indianapolis" misses the people searching by their own town.
2. Make Your Google Business Profile Complete
For local searches, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a patient sees, before your website. Correct hours, real photos, your specialty and services filled in, and answers to common questions. See Google Business Profile for Doctors: A Complete Setup Guide.
3. Earn Reviews Steadily
Patients compare reviews before they call. A steady flow of recent, honest reviews matters more than a big batch from years ago. See How to Get More Detailed Patient Reviews, the Right Way.
4. Own Your Name
When a patient searches your name, the first result should be you: your own website, with your training, your specialty and a clear way to book. Not an old directory listing with the wrong phone number. See Why Your Name Matters More Than Your Website in 2026.
5. Make It Easy to Book on a Phone
Most patients find you on a phone. If your phone number is hard to tap, your forms are long, or your site is slow, they go back and choose the next name.
