1099 Sales Rep Jobs: What to Know Before You Sign.
A 1099 sales role can be the most flexible work you ever do, or a headache you never saw coming. Here is what it means, how the money and taxes work, and what to check before you sign.

The Offer Lands in Your Inbox
The call went well. The next morning there's an email waiting: "Great talking with you. This is a 1099 position, commission only. The agreement is attached." You open the PDF, scroll through nine pages of small print, and realize you're not completely sure what "1099" means for your paycheck, your taxes or your current job.
You're not alone. Plenty of experienced salespeople have only ever worked W-2 jobs. Here is everything you need to know before you sign.
What "1099" Means
The name comes from IRS Form 1099-NEC, the form a company files to report what it paid someone who isn't an employee. For payments made from 2026 on, a company files one for you once it pays you $2,000 or more in a year, and sends you a copy by January 31.
Being a 1099 rep means you're an independent contractor, not an employee. You decide how, when and where you work. In exchange, the company doesn't withhold taxes, doesn't provide benefits, and usually pays by commission instead of salary.
1099 Rep vs. W-2 Employee
Taxes, in Plain Words
As a 1099 rep, you pay income tax plus 15.3% self-employment tax: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare, figured on 92.35% of your net earnings. You can deduct half of it, and ordinary business expenses lower your net earnings. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, you're generally expected to make estimated payments during the year rather than paying one big bill in April. A tax professional can help you set it up the first time, and after that it's routine.
Read the agreement like it's your paycheck, because it is.
What a Good Rep Agreement Covers
Before you sign, make sure the agreement answers five questions in writing. What you earn, and on what. When you're paid, for example after the customer's payment clears. Whether you're paid once or for as long as the customer stays. Your territory, if there is one. And how either side can end the agreement. Commission rates vary widely from industry to industry. What matters most is that the terms are clear and on paper.
One more rule never bends: a real 1099 opportunity never asks you to pay to start. No starter kits, no training fees, no required purchases.
How to Spot a Good 1099 Opportunity
The best ones pay you for something you can actually influence, sell something buyers already need, and let the company handle the work after the sale. They fit around your life instead of taking it over. And they're a natural match for the people you already know.
A 1099 Role Made for People Who Know Doctors
Propelled MD engineers custom websites and search positions for doctors: every site crafted around one doctor's name and specialty, and made to stand out on Google, in Google's AI answers and in ChatGPT. We take only one doctor per specialty in each city, so every doctor we work with gets something their competition can't.
Our independent reps, anywhere in the United States, get doctors they know to fill out their free Position Report. We handle the report, the proposal, the website and the monthly work. You're paid when an established doctor or practice who named you on their Position Report signs and their first monthly payment clears. It's commission only, with no fee to start, no quota and no set hours.
Questions People Ask
What does 1099 mean for a sales job?
It means you are an independent contractor rather than an employee. The company reports what it pays you on IRS Form 1099-NEC, does not withhold taxes and does not provide benefits.
Do 1099 sales reps get benefits?
No. Independent contractors do not receive company benefits such as health insurance or retirement plans, which is part of why commission terms matter.
Can I have a W-2 job and a 1099 sales job at the same time?
Yes, as long as your employer allows outside work. Check your employment agreement and conflict-of-interest policy first.
When will I get my Form 1099-NEC?
Companies must give you a copy by January 31 of the following year, once they have paid you $2,000 or more during the year (for payments made from 2026 on).
